Motorcycle Insurance Delaware
Why does Geico not sell motorcycle insurance in Delaware?
For years there have always been a few states in which Geico will NOT sell motorcycle insurance, particularly Delaware, but they have never given a reason WHY. Does anyone know of any specific reason(s) why Geico would not want to sell motorcycle insurance in Delaware, or any of the other states in which it will sell motorcycle insurance for that matter?
I’m very happy to see that three top contributors have answered. Obviously, it would either be a business decision, or caused by restrictions in the state, or some combination of the two. Does anyone know of any specific Delaware requirements or bureaucratic roadblocks that would deter Geico from selling motorcycle insurance in DE? It doesn’t seem to deter other motorcycle insurance companies. Does anyone have statistics that would indicate to Geico that insuring Delaware cyclists is not worth the risk?
In agreement with the last 3 posts:
A: Yes it’s a business decision. The “red tape” in Delaware is too much deal with. There are so many laws and regulations, that it does not make good business sense to offer insurance when other large companies already have a good hold on the cycle’s demographic market. Geico looks at three main things “will they hold enough business, and can they hold competitive rates” If the answer is yes to both, then they look at: “is it worth the red tape to get in”. It must be a balanced equation.
B: Take Massachusetts for example. Geico only offered insurance in 49 states until 2009, when they finally took on Massachusetts . Same thing, many many regulations by the department of insurance. It literally costs more to maintain and abide by those rules than any other state. Until recently the equation was unbalanced.
